Path Forward

BTA’s Path Forward aims to instill hope and a sense of belonging among Alberta’s Indigenous youth. The truth is, for many Indigenous Albertans, desperation and despair are unfortunate realities and can lead folks down a dangerous path. Addictions, incarcerations, mental health issues, and suicides have plagued numerous Indigenous communities at disproportional rates, for far too long.

STAND UP for Safety

Stand Up for Safety is a new industry philosophy shared by the 18 building trade unions in Alberta. Our goal is to empower stakeholders at all levels from apprentices to business owners to have the freedom to talk openly about safety concerns on the job. On every job. Every single day. Watch the Stand Up for Safety video, which was shot entirely at Shell Scotford.

Social Procurement Agreements

Social Procurement Agreements put Alberta workers, families, and local communities first.

The members of the Building Trades of Alberta live right here in Alberta. We raise our families here. We pay taxes here. And we want to build infrastructure projects the right way; they become part of our province, and we want them to last. That’s why we support Social Procurement Agreements.

Build Together

Build Together is a national workforce development program initiated by Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU). Build Together now has chapters across the country. Alberta was one of the first Chapters (Build Together – Women of the Alberta Building Trades) and has been operating since 2015, but our efforts to bring women into the building trades date back much further.

Trade Winds to Success

Trade Winds to Success offers Trade Orientation and Pre-Apprenticeship Training programs, as well as evaluation and follow-up during apprenticeship training. See the Trade Winds to Success website for intake dates. The program has been featured in the Edmonton Journal and was the recipient of the 2013 Senator Thelma Chalifoux Award presented annually by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

We are thrilled to see the YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) take an interest in the apprenticeship training facilities that our affiliated union locals have to offer.Yesterday the IBEW Local 424 Union brought Premier Danielle Smith on a tour through the Electrical Industry Training Centres Of Alberta. This centre delivers expert training to electricians throughout their apprenticeships. This is just one of the numerous apprenticeship training centres offered by our affiliated unions in Alberta. These centres help provide trades education that remains industry-informed, ensuring that apprentices who come through are ready to do amazing work. The BTA has been engaging with the Alberta Government to create of framework to support our affiliates' centres and allow more apprentices to register for these training programs.#buildingtradesofalberta #skilledtrades #ApprenticeshipTraining #abgov ... Members of the BTA's affiliates including the Teamsters 362, liuna92 and the Operative Plasters & Cement Masons Local 222 attended the Alberta Legislative Assembly's vote on Bill 207: The Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Amendment Act. The bill aimed to provide a framework to instate compulsory trades and provide funding for union apprenticeship training centres.Compulsory trades ensure that skilled labour is done by certified skilled trades workers. This would protect the value of the skilled trades, allowing Alberta to maintain the most skilled workforce in North America. This is how we guarantee the Alberta Advantage in our industry and ensure that projects are built to last. The BTA has been engaging with the YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) to ensure that the apprenticeship training facilities of our affiliated union locals receive the support they to train apprentices. These centres offer high-standard, industry-informed training for apprentices from their first year until they pass their red seal. We have had many productive conversations with the Alberta Government and look forward to continuing to work with them on this opportunity. The BTA thanks MLA Rhiannon Hoyle for bringing these issues forward in the Legislature. We also thank the members of both parties who contributed to the debate and stakeholder engagement on this legislation. The final vote count for the bill was 20 in favour, 43 against. You can read about the bill here:www.assembly.ab.ca/assembly-business/bills/bill?billinfoid=12037&from=billsWe will continue to work with all parties in Alberta on issues like these that matter to our members.#buildingtradesofalberta #skilledtrades #ableg ...
